Et tu, Australia? The battle for equal marriage continues

So, now the Aussies have opted to slam the doors shut on gay marriage too? Jeez, Toto, you’d think a country nicknamed Oz would be more tolerant towards the gays.

Following India’s latest knockout blow to equal rights earlier this week after they reinstated an 153 year old law that criminalises homosexuality, Australia has apparently followed suit and leapt on the bigoted band wagon as the Australian high court decided to ban marriage for same-sex couples. In October the Australian parliament passed a bill that legalised same sex marriage in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Since then 27 couples have been wed and now, since the government declared the bill was inconsistent with federal laws, those 27 couples have has their marriage declared invalid and doors have slammed shut to others hoping to make the same pledge to the ones they love. Absolutely heartbreaking.

The biggest concern here is that Australia isn’t some developing country whose ignorance we can pin on lack of education. It’s a first world country and is completely and utterly western and, seemingly, civilised. The news isn’t censored and people have full access to it. So, why have they erected a massive ‘aisle closed’ sign to the gay and lesbian community?

Equal marriage is something backed by many in Australia, particularly the younger generation but because it clashes with ‘federal law’ they bill it has been changed.

I’m getting concerned about the amount of road works currently set up on the yellow brick road (which obviously leads to the land of equality.) Australia is a big country and their example is reason enough to give pause to social progression in other countries that may be considering legalising or perhaps simply decriminalising gay marriage/homosexuality. More worrying though is the message it sends to those considering re-criminalising homosexuality- it’s essentially a thumbs up.

I mean, let’s be fair, no one actually likes Russia and as grotesque and unjust as their treatment of the LGBT is, no one really expects Putin to parade around defiantly flying a rainbow flag. All though that would be an interesting turn of events.

However Australia, well this is a truly shocking blow. Merely months after its government was beginning to show signs of progression it’s overturned a law and we’re back to square one. Then again this is a country that banned small breasted women from the porn industry because it could encourage pedophelia and that also censored the Looney Toons, so bizarre laws are somewhat commonplace.
